Probability and arguments: Keynes’s legacy

چکیده

Abstract John Maynard Keynes’s A Treatise on Probability is the seminal text for logical interpretation of probability. According to his analysis, probabilities are evidential relations between a hypothesis and some evidence, just like deductive logic. While philosophers had suggested similar ideas prior Keynes, it was not until that probability advocated in clear, systematic rigorous way. I trace influence philosophy through heterogeneous sample thinkers who adopted interpretation. This consists Frederick C. Benenson, Roy Harrod, Donald Williams, Henry E. Kyburg David Stove. The Keynes prove be adaptable their diverse theories My discussion indicates both robustness theory importance its whom describe. also discuss Problem Priors. argue none those have obviously improved with respect this issue.

Probability in Fine-tuning Design Arguments

This paper examines probabilistic versions of the fine-tuning argument for design (FTA), with an emphasis on the interpretation of the probability statements involved in such arguments. Three categories of probability are considered: physical, epistemic, and logical. Of the three possibilities, I argue that only logical probability could possibly support a cogent probabilistic FTA. However, wit...

Plantinga’s Probability Arguments Against Evolutionary Naturalism

In Chapter 12 of Warrant and Proper Function, Alvin Plantinga constructs two arguments against evolutionary naturalism, which he construes as a conjunction E&N . The hypothesis E says that “human cognitive faculties arose by way of the mechanisms to which contemporary evolutionary thought directs our attention (p. 220).” With respect to proposition N , Plantinga (p. 270) says “it isn’t easy to ...

Keyness in Shakespeare's Plays

This paper describes a novel method of identifying keyness in texts using relational learning. The relational learning is based on Inductive Logic Programing (ILP) in first-order logic. Using this method we can extract first-order logic formulas satisfied in a set of positive examples and not satisfied in a set of negative examples. We tested this method on a collection of Shakespeare’s plays t...

Diagonal arguments and fixed points

‎A universal schema for diagonalization was popularized by N.S‎. ‎Yanofsky (2003)‎, ‎based on a pioneering work of F.W‎. ‎Lawvere (1969)‎, ‎in which the existence of a (diagonolized-out and contradictory) object implies the existence of a fixed-point for a certain function‎. ‎It was shown that many self-referential paradoxes and diagonally proved theorems can fit in that schema‎. ‎Here‎, ‎we fi...

Probability and Uncertainty: the legacy of Georgescu-Roegen

In this paper we consider Georgescu-Roegen’s approach to uncertainty, showing that his characterization of expectations cannot be reduced to any probabilistic decision making model. Drawing upon Georgescu-Roegen lesson a lexicographical utility function is proposed and analyzed in the mark of his own peculiar scientific methodology. It is demonstrated that such a formulation can be useful in so...
